It's not exactly a celebration dinner, I just didn't feel like calling it something it can't be either. Since you've asked... if I had proposed at home, my parents would have wanted something called a yuinou. It's a dinner for the couples' families to get to know each other better and exchange gifts to bless the union, before the engagement is official.

Obviously that's not something we can ever do, but I would like to get as close as we can in spirit. I'm not using a traditional menu, but a representative one for the people who can't be here. So while at home, yes, this would be an event at a restaurant, in this place that would take it even further from what I want.

These days, yes. Like a lot of traditions the origins are questionable but acknowledging the ability to change -- both oneself and the intent behind things like traditions -- is meaningful. And I know my parents wouldn't mind how far I'm straying from our culture to make this right for us.

Not that I can think of. We're already borrowing dining sets from friends in the building.
